Underwater aircraft recovery project

May 1977
AT THE end of last month a 15-man team from the Ohakea air force base began an expedition to recover, for a museum at the base, a former RNZAF Grumman Avenger which was ditched in the sea off Gisborne in 1944. Bad weather intervened, however, and the work of the expedition was severely limited by high seas and poor underwater visibility. In this article, the project leader, Squadron Leader Roly Parsons, details preparations for the recovery and some of the work that was undertaken.
